Shenandoah Valley Governor’s School has won the Trex Plastic Film Recycling Challenge in August County!
AP Environmental students under the guidance of Mrs. Nelson coordinated the collection at SVGS. About 1.09 lbs. per student and a total of 240 lbs. of plastic film and bags were collected!!! Materials such as grocery bags, bread bags, case overwrap, dry cleaning bags, newspaper sleeves, ice bags, ziplock & other re-sealable bags, produce bags, bubble wrap, and cereal bags were collected. This activity promoted a better understanding and appreciation for the importance of recycling.
This year 430 schools participated nationwide in this contest competing against each other to recycle the most plastic film. Trex is the inventor of wood-alternative composite decking for environmentally responsible outdoor products. SVGS will be awarded a Trex bench.
