Welcome from the SVGS Coordinator
Dear SVGS Students and Parents/Guardians,
I am excited to introduce myself as the new Coordinator (principal) of the SVGS team and to welcome you to what I know will be an exciting and rewarding school year.
Over the past 10 years, I have worked in higher education as an Assistant Professor and Director of the Program for the Exceptionally Gifted (PEG). While I have greatly enjoyed supporting students at the university level, joining SVGS is especially meaningful to me. Before my career in higher education, I served as a Differentiation Specialist, where I had the privilege of helping students prepare and apply for the SVGS program. I have long admired the exceptional opportunities SVGS provides, and I am thrilled to now work alongside such dedicated staff and talented students.
Being selected for SVGS is an accomplishment that you should be proud of. It reflects your academic ability, potential, and commitment to learning. Along with that honor, however, comes additional responsibility. The college-level rigor of SVGS courses requires students to approach their work with maturity, self-discipline, and a strong work ethic.
Throughout the year, I will expect students to be strong self-advocates and to demonstrate responsibility, integrity, effective time management, and regular attendance. These habits are essential for success, not only at SVGS but also in college and beyond. Just as in a university classroom, missing class sessions can be difficult to make up, as instruction, discussions, labs, and collaborative learning experiences cannot always be replicated outside of class. Students should plan accordingly and make attendance a top priority.
While my expectations are high, so is my commitment to supporting every student. I want each of you to be appropriately challenged, to grow academically and personally, and to make the most of the opportunities available through this program. I am always happy to answer questions, provide guidance, or help connect students and families with the resources they need to be successful.
I look forward to getting to know each of you and to a year filled with learning, growth, and achievement. Together, I know we can make this a fun, productive, and rewarding experience.
I can’t wait to get started!
Sincerely,
Carla R. Van Devander, MEd
