The Shenandoah Valley Governor’s School, in association with ShenanArts, is proud to present The Mystery of Edwin Drood, book, music, and lyrics by Rupert Holmes. The true mystery of this Victorian whodunnit is how it ends, and even the actors won’t know which of the show’s many possible endings they’ll perform until the audience votes.
It’s 1892, and the actors of London’s Music Hall Royale are eager to present the musical premiere of The Mystery of Edwin Drood. There’s just one problem – the peerless Charles Dickens died before completing the original novel, so no one knows just how the mystery ends. The Music Hall’s Chairman has a plan, though – let the audience vote to determine the outcome, even though they won’t know the result of the vote until it unfolds onstage. Musical numbers include “There You Are,” “Moonfall,” “Off to the Races,” and “Murderer’s Confession.”
The show will run January 21-24 at nTelos Theater. Performance times are as follows: Jan. 21-23 at 7:00 p.m. and Jan. 24 at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 for students under 18, $12 for senior citizens and college students, and $15 for adults. Directed by Cassy Whitacre, The Mystery of Edwin Drood showcases Hailey White in the title role, Abbey Kincheloe as the omnipotent Chairman, Brant Fife as the villainous John Jasper, Audrey Wood as the lovely Rosa Bud, Morgan Thomas as the enigmatic Princess Puffer, Nathaniel Marion as Reverend Crisparkle, and Michael Hawes and Callie Bandy as the Landless twins. Rachel Dixon, Savannah Lunger, Molly Diment, Elle Wood, Courtney Ott, and Jacob Wine are also featured. The cast also includes Grace Belcher, Julia Bussey, Ben Delahay, Nicole DiOrio, Kennedy Eakin, Mary Grace Graber, Jordan Huffer, Morgan Lyle, Darby Lucius-Milliman, Nora Oeschlin, Courtney Ott, Sarah Riddell, Emily Thompson, Bekah Trumbo, Elle Wood, and Jasper Wronko.
The production is under the musical direction of Christine Nielsen. SVGS alumnae Lindsey Walters, Cori McDaniel, and Megan Pelaccio serve as choreographer, lighting designer, and production stage manager, respectively. The Mystery of Edwin Drood features set design by Jennifer Vaughan and costume design by Kate Delaney, Susan Polly, and Susan Vass.
