On Saturday, Nov. 22, about 200 elementary and middle school students from the Shenandoah Valley will compete in the FIRST LEGO LEAGUE World Class competition at Shelburne Middle School. The competition is sponsored by Staunton City Schools and Shenandoah Valley Governor’s School. SVGS faculty, engineering students and FIRST Robotics team will work with staff from Shelburne MS. SVGS PSAC will provide breakfast for volunteers. Lunch for volunteers will be donated by Mill Street Grill.
The field of 17 teams includes local teams from North River Elementary School, Shelburne Middle School, Kate Collins Middle School and Stuart Hall. Winning teams will advance to the state tournament in December.
Students are challenged is to design an innovative solutions that adds value to society by improving something that already exists, using something that exists in a new way, or inventing something totally new to help people’s learning experiences. Successful teams must ask develop a research question, design a solution, communicate their work and design and program robots to perform specific related tasks. FIRST LEGO League is designed to inspire students’ interest in science and technology in a fun, competitive environment.
