Two teams of students recently had the opportunity to compete in the MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge (M3) on February 28. *We were notified on 3/19 that Team 2 made it through the first round of judging ( only 145 teams nationally out of 760) and will move on to the next round of judging.
Team members are as follows:
Team 1: Brandon Bauer, Eva Frederick, Gabby Niculescu, Tiernan Rhodes, Ella Thompson
Team 2: Luca Campbell, Carter Koehn, Hugh Shields
Teacher/Coach: Anthony Tyler
It is a competition where students work in teams to tackle a real-world problem under time and resource constraints (much like those faced by mathematicians in industry today). It was a 14-hour long competition and they used every last minute of the time. They were working on a problem where they were modeling how electric semi-truck numbers would grow over time (assuming necessary infrastructure was in place). They competed against 760 other teams with almost 3,500 students vying for a piece of the $100,000 scholarship prize. Results are still pending!
