The 1st Annual Shenandoah Valley Governor’s School Summer Music Camp will be held at the Governor’s School in Fishersville! There are two different sessions offered: “Join the Circle, Get in the Line: Traditional Appalachian Music and Dance” – June 5-8 and “Music Theory and Composition” – June 12-15. The Summer Music Camp is a day camp for rising 8th-12th graders in Augusta County, Staunton, and Waynesboro. No audition is required but basic music fluency is assumed.
Students will participate in musical enrichment opportunities and receive instruction to enhance musical performance skills. This summer music experience promises to be both highly rewarding and very enjoyable!

Join the Circle, Get in the Line: Traditional Appalachian Music and Dance
June 5-8, Monday – Thursday, 9-noon. (Public dance will be Thursday evening the 8th.)
This workshop is an invitation to those with an interest in playing the traditional music of our Appalachian region to partake in a unique opportunity to appreciate the vital role that the musicians play in supporting traditional dance.
The workshop will culminate in a social dance (contra and square) open and promoted to the public, for which the students have the thrill of playing alongside established traditional musicians and dance callers from the area!
Basic fluency on an instrument (i.e. fiddle, guitar, banjo, mandolin, other strings, piano/keyboard) is assumed. Most wind instruments can be accommodated.
Led by Bill Wellington, well-known storyteller, folk musician, dance caller, teacher and recording artist. and Jim Harrington, involved in several area bands, including Wanda and The White Boys, Rhythm Road, WheelHouse, and Balancing Act.

Music Composition & Theory
June 12-15, Monday – Thursday, 9-noon
In this workshop you will gain new insights into the basics and rewards of composing your own original music and songs. As the week progresses you will have various short assignments to compose, and by the end of the week you will have composed a 16-measure piece for up to eight instruments!
One or more working composers will visit the workshop and show you their compositions and “tricks of the trade”. Musecore, a free composing software app, will be used. Laptops will be available during the workshop if needed.
Led by Richard Adams, a multi-instrumentalist, composer, educator, playwright, producer, and recording/audio engineer. Widely traveled to teach and perform, he has composed the music and created the soundtracks for musicals, and composed and arranged for both instrumental and choral ensembles.
