The Olympians “A Muse-ical”

Shenandoah Valley Governor’s School Undertakes a Quest of Mythic Proportions with

The Olympians, Jan. 19-22 at ShenanArts

Ancient Greek myths weave the tales of heroes like Jason, Perseus, and Odysseus. But where are the heroines? The Olympians, a brand new “muse-ical” aims to fill that void with a lively and original spin on the traditional hero quest. Shenandoah Valley Governor’s School, in association with ShenanArts, is excited to pilot the first fully-staged production of The Olympians, a new piece by the creators of The Hello Girls.

The Olympians, book by Cara Reichel and musical arrangements by Peter Mills, follows three heroines chosen by the goddesses to undertake a perilous quest. Along the way, they discover the power of friendship and the value of staying true to yourself. The show features hit songs from the last five decades, including “Wide Open Spaces” (The Chicks), “One Way or Another” (Blondie), “Venus” (Bananarama), and “Breakaway” (Kelly Clarkson).

The show will run January 19-22 at ShenanArts in Staunton. Performance times are as follows:  Jan. 19-21 at 7:00 p.m. and Jan. 22 at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 for students 18 and under, $12 for senior citizens and college students, and $15 for adults. The performance is recommended for ages 8 and up. To purchase tickets, please visit www.ShenanArts.org.

Directed by Cassy Whitacre, The Olympians features Lauren Ghidoni, Ava Quesenberry, and Frog Trzell as the intrepid heroines, with Vivi Alteau, Tristyn Bowersox, Keira Harrison, and Elsa Silvestri as the bickering immortals and Jayden Golder, Jacob Hostetter, and Oliver Oakes as the men who help or hinder the quest. Adelie Condra, JJ Redifer, Ryleigh Steele, and Marina Thomas will play an ensemble of soldiers, citizens, and island-dwellers. The cast includes students from Staunton, Waynesboro, and Augusta County.

Megan Zuhowski serves as musical director, and SVGS students Kaileigh Atkinson and Marissa Styers are creating the choreography. The production team includes Cori McDaniel (SVGS class of 2010), Dawn Davis, Kate Delaney, Susan Polly, and Susan Vass.

The Olympians is presented through special arrangement with, and all authorized performance materials are supplied by, Theatrical Rights Worldwide (www.theatricalrights.com).
